Mundial Magazine: Europa League Final

By | Writing | No Comments

In May 2015, I was sent to Warsaw by Mundial Magazine to cover the Europa League Final. The article centred upon the experiences of Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk fans, who’s team had reached the competition’s penultimate match but were experiencing civil war in their homeland of Ukraine.

Tasks included the submission of a 1200 word article (not published online yet), social media coverage and photographs.

Gieves & Hawkes and Whitley Neil: A Sense of Adventure

By | Photography | No Comments

‘A Sense of Adventure’ was a collaboration between Gieves & Hawkes, Whiteley Neil Gin and Halcyon Magazine.

Using green screen technology, models were transported to far flung corners of the world in a photoshoot, aligning an urbane, adventurous spirit with both brands. The aim was playful high fashion, which was achieved.

I conceived, directed and organised the shoot encompassing casting, prop sourcing and supervision of a photographer Jonathan Dawe.

Knowledge Lives Everywhere

FACT exhibition ‘Knowledge Lives Everywhere’ placed people at its centre.  As part of the show, I undertook a ten week art residency that involved collating stories of the general public. During daily workshops, the public were asked to come along with items and share anecdotes pertaining to a weekly theme (love, war, work etc), which were recorded.

Audio, photographs and video was then edited to create a series of ‘Digital Stories’, which became part of a growing archive displayed in the exhibition.

NHS: Drop A Drink Size Flashmob

By | Community | No Comments

In December 2014, the NHS introduced a campaign to help people lose weight through sensible drinking called ‘Drop A Drink Size’. I was asked to film a flashmob as part of the launch, which involved filming a ‘spontaneous’ dance routine in one of Liverpool’s busiest thoroughfares. The job involved directing four cameras and a dance troop, as well as editing the footage in two days.

Halcyon Magazine

In 2010, with four business partners, I founded Halcyon Magazine. With ten print issues, an active website and engaged social media, it became a cult publication, distributed throughout the UK and Europe.

Bored with the offering of men’s magazines at the time, we had a very clear aim with our quarterly. Halcyon was created to offer a credible alternative to crass, low-end ‘lads mags’ and ostentatious, out of touch publications. As Content Editor I’d plan, write and edit features, co-manage social media and website, as well as direct graphic design and photoshoots. A bit of everything, really. You can visit Halcyon Magazine’s website here.

Bolton Octagon Theatre: Journey’s End

In September 2014  I was asked to direct two trailers for the Octagon Theatre, Bolton.

One of the the plays- directed by Olivier Award winning director David Thacker, featuring actors Richard Graham (Titanic, Gangs of New York) and Colin Conner (Peaky Blinders, Foyles War)- was RC Sherriff’s classic, Journey’s End.

The production enjoyed full capacity shows and a four star review in The Guardian.
